A variety of colors were carried by the United States Marine Corps troops from the Revolution onward. Their designs varied. The emblem of the Corps, consisting of a globe placed over an anchor and bearing at the top an eagle, has been in use from at least the First World War onward. The globe features the New World, site of most early Marine Corps military engagements. Red and gold were made the official colors of the Corps in 1925 and the current standard (flag) of the Corps was established in 1939. The scroll held in the beak of the eagle in this flag bears the Latin motto SEMPER FIDELIS (Always Faithful).

The United States Air Force came into existence in 1947. The distinctive color (flag) of the Air Force was established in 1951. The flag background is a special shade known as "Air Force blue." The central shield has a stylized thunderbolt symbol of the kind used in the Roman Empire. The blue shield appears over stylized white clouds known in heraldry as nebuly. The ring of 13 stars refers to the original states of the nation. A bald eagle, the national bird, stands at the top with its wings spread. Behind its head is an area of clouds similar to those appearing in the coat of arms of the United States.

In 1959 a special seal was created for the United States Navy. Later that seal was used on a flag to be displayed on shore by color guards. The basic design was a reproduction of the Navy seal which had been in use for almost 200 years. It shows a Revolutionary War vessel with the national flag, the naval pennant, and the rank flag of the commanding officer. In the foreground is an American bald eagle with a large anchor behind it. In the official seal the foreground showed some land. However, when the flag was adopted the Secretary of the Navy insisted that only the ocean be represented, without any land area.

The flag for the United States Army was created in 1956. It has a white background with emblems in blue and red -- national colors. The design was based on the Army seal adopted in 1779 by the Continental Congress. It includes a cuirass (breast plate) that represents the Army defending the nation. There is also a liberty cap of the type used in the Roman Empire and a pike carried by certain military officers. Cannon, cannonballs, a mortar, powder flask and a rattlesnake (such as appeared on some Revolutionary War flags) complete the design. The date at the bottom (1775) indicates the year the United States Army was officially established.

The Revenue Cutter Service, predecessor of the United States Coast Guard, had a flag designed for it in 1799. That flag, with vertical stripes, is still in use but it was not chosen by the Coast Guard when a ceremonial color was adopted in July 1951. The United States coat of arms, dating from 1782, was displayed in the center of a white field and instead of the usual colors the design featured the national red, white and blue. The name of the service is inscribed above the coat of arms, while below is the Coast Guard motto, SEMPER PARATUS (Always Ready). The date 1790 honors the creation of the Revenue Cutter Service. Model: 439005.
